Destabilising Bangladesh would affect the whole region: Dr Yunus to NDTV
Dr. Muhammad Yunus has warned that if anyone tries to destabilize Bangladesh, instability will spread to Myanmar, India's Seven Sisters, and West Bengal.
He issued this warning in an interview with Indian news media NDTV on Tuesday.
He stated, "If you destabilize Bangladesh, it will spread around Bangladesh including Myanmar, and extend to the Seven Sisters in West Bengal. It will be like a volcanic eruption around us and throughout Myanmar. It will be a big problem, as there are millions of Rohingyas here."
Dr. Yunus further noted that restoring law and order is now the biggest issue facing Bangladesh. If this is not achieved, it will impact neighboring countries, including India.
He explained, "There are 170 million people, most of whom are young and have never voted. You need to ensure that there is democracy in the country. These young people have never gone to a polling station because elections have not been held. We need to engage with our youth."
Regarding the law and order situation, Dr. Yunus said, "The issue of law and order is indeed very important. This situation arose mainly from the demand for the resignation of the Prime Minister (Sheikh Hasina), and that demand has eventually been met. Today, they (the people) are celebrating. This type of celebration reminds us of December 16, 1971, when we were freed from the Pakistanis."
