Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan forced to resign in face of mounting protest
Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has decided to resign from his position after students staged a protest on Saturday.
He stated that he would meet with President Mohammed Shahabuddin this evening to tender his resignation.
Earlier, the Supreme Court's full court meeting was canceled after students issued a two-hour ultimatum for the resignation of the Chief Justice and other Appellate Division justices by noon Saturday.
They threatened to besiege their homes if the demand was not met, as announced by Hasnat Abdullah, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, from the Supreme Court premises.
After his announcement on facebook, students marched to the High Court premises, calling for the resignation of the Chief Justice, other justices aligned with the Awami League, and a restructuring of the country's judiciary.
They also urged students from across the country to assemble in support of their demands.
Asif Mahmud, the Youth and Sports Adviser to the interim government, posted on Facebook, stating, "The Chief Justice, a member of the fascist regime, has called for a full court meeting without consulting the government."
On the issue of the Chief Justice's resignation demanded by protesting students, Interim Government Law Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul stated that the Chief Justice should recognize how to address such demands from a mass movement.
The Law Adviser noted that he would leave it to the Chief Justice to determine the appropriate response to this call.
On Saturday, following his appointment to the interim government, the Law Adviser arrived at the Secretariat and addressed questions from the media.
The demand for the Chief Justice's resignation was among the topics discussed by journalists.
Professor Asif Nazrul remarked that the significant mass movement had led to the departure of the Awami League leader, who had been in power for 16-17 years.
He emphasized that it is up to the Chief Justice to decide how to respond to such demands from this context.
