Lieutenant General (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Choudhury, Home and Agriculture Adviser, has pinpointed enhancing law and order as the foremost challenge confronting the Ministry of Home Affairs.
He made this statement on Monday during a press briefing at his office in the Secretariat.
"Our primary challenge at the Ministry of Home Affairs is law and order. Our objective is to improve the situation as swiftly as possible," the Adviser stressed, underlining the urgency of the issue.
Earlier in the day, the Home Adviser met with United Nations Resident Coordinator, Gwyn Lewis, to discuss potential international support.
"The conversation mainly revolved around the kind of assistance and cooperation we might receive to address this situation. We also covered the areas where we are seeking support," Jahangir Alam noted.
The ongoing Rohingya crisis was a significant topic of discussion. The Adviser remarked, "They are helping with the Rohingya issue, and we have requested additional support.
With 1.2 million Rohingyas and their numbers rising daily, along with escalating costs, we are questioning how long we can sustain these expenses."
He also mentioned that a UN fact-finding mission is expected to visit Bangladesh soon to evaluate the situation.
"We discussed the type of cooperation they will offer and what support we need," the Adviser added, indicating that the mission could arrive as early as next week.
In addition to his duties as Home Adviser, Jahangir Alam also addressed his role as Agriculture Adviser.
"At the Ministry of Agriculture, my focus is on increasing production to better feed the population," he said, highlighting his dedication to tackling both the country's agricultural needs and the pressing law and order issues.
