Major equipment delivered for Rooppur NPP unit 2

The "Transport Lock," a key component of the nuclear fuel handling system for Unit-2 at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, has been delivered to the construction site and will soon be installed in the reactor building.

This process requires high precision and considerable labor.

The Transport Lock is a cylindrical structure, weighing 235 tons, with a length of 12.7 meters and a diameter of 10 meters. Its primary role is to contain radioactive substances within the reactor’s containment area and provide fire protection.

During the plant’s normal operations, the Transport Lock facilitates the movement of cargo to the reactor maintenance level for equipment repairs, the intake of fresh fuel, and the removal of spent fuel.

Alexey Deriy, ASE Vice President for Projects in Bangladesh, commented, "The Rooppur NPP project is progressing well, including construction, equipment supply, installation, start-up, and adjustment works.

This progress affirms that Rosatom is effectively meeting its commitments to its Bangladeshi partner and ensuring the reliability and safety of its technologies for the benefit of current and future generations in Bangladesh."

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant represents Bangladesh’s first venture into nuclear energy, developed with both technical and financial backing from Russia. The facility includes two units, delivering a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts.

The first unit is now preparing for start-up. Once fully operational, the plant is anticipated to ensure a dependable supply of high-quality electricity and be instrumental in maintaining the base load.

It features the advanced Generation 3+ Russian VVER 1200 reactors, which meet all international safety standards.
