Law enforcement agencies, including the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), are actively searching for Jannat-Ara-Talukder Henry, the former Member of Parliament for Sirajganj-2, who has mysteriously accumulated a fortune worth hundreds of crores of Taka.

Once a modest school teacher, Henry’s sudden accumulation of vast wealth has raised questions about the "magic lamp" that transformed her into a multi-millionaire.

Now a controversial figure, Henry faces various allegations of corruption and abuse of power. Despite reporting an annual income of only Tk 1.22 lakh and expenses of Tk 80,000 in her tax statement 15 years ago, her wealth has surged by an astonishing 884 times, reaching nearly Tk 57 crore.

Reliable sources suggest her assets could actually be worth over Tk 300 crore.

The ACC has decided to reopen an investigation into Henry’s wealth, sparking both anticipation and concern among Sirajganj residents.

This move follows three separate cases filed against her related to the deaths of three Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal activists during the Quota Reform Movement.

Henry’s rapid rise began after her appointment to the board of directors of Sonali Bank in 2009, following her loss in the 2008 national elections. Her tenure overlapped with the notorious Hallmark loan scandal, where Tanveer Ahmed of the Hallmark Group accused members of the Sonali Bank board, including Henry, of accepting bribes.

Despite these serious allegations, Henry and other board members avoided legal repercussions, raising questions about the thoroughness of the ACC’s previous investigations.

Henry's opulent lifestyle stands in stark contrast to her modest beginnings as a school teacher. In Sirajganj, she owns numerous commercial properties, luxury vehicles, and extensive land holdings.

There are rumors that she has channeled money abroad through illegal means and possesses substantial undisclosed assets, including properties in Dhaka and Sirajganj, gold jewelry, and high-end cars.

Her husband, Shamim Talukdar Labu, has also experienced a dramatic increase in wealth, with his assets expanding 136 times over the past 15 years. He now owns nearly Tk 10 crore worth of assets and has reportedly acquired properties and vehicles in Germany.

The ACC's renewed scrutiny of Henry’s financial activities has rekindled public interest in her case. Questions abound about her current whereabouts; while rumors suggest she might be hiding in Sirajganj under the protection of influential associates, her precise location remains unknown.

The ACC’s investigation could uncover the secrets behind her astonishing wealth and potentially resolve one of Bangladesh’s most perplexing corruption cases.

Attempts to contact Henry yielded no response, as her phone was switched off, leaving many questions about her sudden disappearance and the origins of her wealth unanswered.
