IAEA Delegation Visits Kursk Nuclear Power Plant Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict
A delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), led by Director General Rafael Grossi, conducted a site visit to the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Russia On August 27, 2024.
The visit, which was facilitated at the invitation of Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, Russia’s state atomic energy corporation, aimed to evaluate the plant's operations amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
During the visit, Grossi observed that Kursk NPP Unit 3 was operating at its full capacity, while Unit 4 was undergoing scheduled preventive maintenance.
The delegation was shown the design features of the RBMK-type reactors. Additionally, the IAEA team assessed the construction progress of the Kursk II NPP, noting that it is advancing as planned.
Grossi also reviewed the effects of recent Ukrainian strikes on the industrial site of the Kursk NPP, evaluating the associated nuclear safety risks.
The findings from this visit are expected to be discussed in detail between Alexey Likhachev and Rafael Grossi in Kaliningrad in the near future.
