Tarique Rahman: We are ready to support the Yunus administration for ensuring a “people’s state”
In a video message marking the BNP's founding anniversary on Sunday, Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman declared that the people are prepared to support a caretaker government to facilitate the establishment of a representative state and implement necessary reforms through direct voting.
Rahman emphasized to party leaders and activists, “My clear message is to win the hearts of the people not through power or intimidation, but through justice and generosity. Earn their love.”
He further asserted that the BNP is convinced that there is no alternative to state and political reforms for creating the Bangladesh that people envision.
According to Rahman, the public believes that long-term reforms will be more effective if executed by a government elected through direct voting, a principle also recognized in the democratic world.
Tarique criticized the autocratic Hasina for fleeing the country, leaving it in chaos across various sectors including politics, education, culture, the economy, public administration, and the judiciary.
He noted that Hasina’s departure has left the country reliant on debt, imports, and foreign aid, and highlighted that not only Hasina but also her unelected cabinet members, MPs, and even the appointee of the Baitul Mukarram’s Khateeb have fled.
Tarique concluded by stating that the people are eager to overcome this unprecedented crisis and move towards a future of dignity and prosperity.
He further elaborated, "The BNP asserts that effective state reform requires transparency in the perspectives and actions of the country's political parties. In July 2023, the BNP introduced a comprehensive program for both party and state reform.”
“This 31-point framework includes creating an inclusive, equitable, and harmonious government based on Bangladeshi nationalism; implementing a 'non-partisan caretaker government' during elections; ensuring a balance of power among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches; limiting the Prime Minister's tenure to no more than two consecutive terms; establishing a 'bicameral legislature'; and reviewing Article 70 of the constitution, among other reforms," he added.
Tarique Rahman also criticized Gono Bhaban, stating that it has become a symbol of the autocratic Hasina's corruption, misrule, and injustices.
He noted that there are growing calls to transform Gono Bhaban into a museum documenting enforced disappearances, murders, kidnappings, and mass killings.
Rahman urged his party leaders and activists to support flood-affected individuals, avoid seeking revenge, refrain from taking the law into their own hands, and ensure that no one falls victim to harassment or false accusations.
