Russia holds talks with the IAEA on the safety of Kursk and Zaporizhian nuclear power plants
Russia conducted interdepartmental consultations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Kaliningrad on September 6, 2024, focusing on the safety and security of the Kursk and Zaporizhian nuclear power plants.
The Russian delegation, led by Rosatom Director
General Alexey Likhachev, and the IAEA delegation, led by Director General
Rafael Grossi, discussed the status of both facilities.
Likhachev assured that the Kursk NPP is operating normally, a situation that Grossi witnessed during his visit on August 27.
Likhachev also called for the IAEA Secretariat to address recent Ukrainian attacks on the plant.
Regarding the Zaporizhian NPP, Likhachev emphasized
that Russia is taking all necessary steps to ensure its safe operation despite
ongoing threats.
He also addressed issues related to the exchange of information between the IAEA team and Russian agencies.
Grossi provided an assessment of both plants and
detailed the regular rotation of IAEA experts at the Zaporizhian NPP.
During his recent visit, Grossi inspected the cooling tower damaged in the August 11 attack.
Both parties committed to maintaining regular communication and consultations in the future.
