Md. Tajul Islam, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, announced on Saturday that a comprehensive investigation is underway to gather accurate information about the mass killings during the July-August student protests.

The investigation includes letters being sent to media outlets, hospitals, civil surgeons, deputy commissioners, and police superintendents to collect data on the deaths, which allegedly occurred under orders from the previous government during the 36 days of widespread violence and alleged state-sponsored repression.

"We are actively visiting hospitals and contacting cemetery management authorities to gather information on the July-August genocide," Tajul Islam told reporters.

He emphasized the importance of student witnesses, stating, "We are working with student movement coordinators to gain a complete understanding of the events."

Government estimates suggest over 800 people were killed by law enforcement and Awami League supporters during the protests, with the actual number likely higher. Thousands are still receiving medical treatment for their injuries. Tajul Islam classified these killings as international crimes and confirmed the July-August massacre will be prosecuted in the ICT.

The Chief Prosecutor also acknowledged concerns about the tribunal's preparedness for the upcoming trials, especially regarding its facilities.

"The current state of the International Crimes Tribunal is inadequate for high-profile trials. We also expect visits from foreign delegates once the trials begin, so the old tribunal building urgently needs repairs and renovations."

Tajul Islam appealed for cooperation from everyone, requesting individuals and institutions to share accurate information about the killings.

"We are committed to delivering justice in line with international standards and ensuring a transparent trial. We urge everyone to come forward and contribute to this pursuit of justice," he concluded.

As the ICT's investigation continues, the nation observes with keen interest, hoping the trials will bring closure and accountability for the tragic events of the July-August protests.
