Jamaat condemns vigilante killings, calls for strict law enforcement
In a statement released on Friday, Professor Mia Golam Parwar, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, voiced serious concern regarding recent incidents of vigilante justice at Dhaka University (DU) and Jahangirnagar University (JU), labeling these events as a "grave threat to the country’s peace, stability, and law and order."
Professor Parwar underscored the worrying trend of individuals taking the law into their own hands, describing it as a troubling indicator for the nation’s future. "Such actions represent a significant threat to the country’s peace and discipline," he stated.
He referred to two recent killings that occurred on Thursday. At DU’s Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall, a group of students reportedly beat a young man named Tofazzal Hossain to death on suspicions of theft. On the same day, Shamim Molla, a former student leader at Jahangirnagar University, was viciously attacked and killed after multiple assaults.
Professor Parwar noted that these incidents are part of a larger pattern of mob violence. He mentioned another case where a youth named Mamun was killed in Khagrachari on Wednesday over theft allegations, as well as the murder of former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Abdullah Al Masud at Rajshahi University on September 7.
These events have ignited widespread outrage and unrest throughout the country, prompting many to question the effectiveness of law enforcement. Professor Parwar described the killings as "heartbreaking, cruel, unexpected, and tragic," expressing his profound sorrow and condemnation.
"I urge law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that no one feels entitled to take the law into their own hands," he said, calling for prompt justice. He stressed the importance of the government restoring the rule of law and swiftly bringing those responsible for the killings to account. He also extended his condolences to the victims' families and prayed for their departed souls.
In conclusion, Professor Parwar appealed to authorities to apprehend those involved in these crimes and impose strict punishments to deter future incidents. He emphasized that only through effective law enforcement and governance can the peace and order of the country be maintained.
