Following a challenging few weeks in the readymade garment (RMG) sector that led to the temporary closure of hundreds of factories, the Bangladesh interim government announced on Tuesday that it will raise the existing attendance bonus for garment workers by 225 taka.
In addition, the government-mandated minimum wage will be enforced across all factories by October, as outlined in a joint statement released at the secretariat on Tuesday.
Factory owners are also required to settle any outstanding wages to workers by October 10. The owners have agreed to meet the 18-point demands put forth by the workers.
This joint announcement was made at the secretariat in the presence of government officials, BGMEA leaders, and representatives from labor organizations.
AHM Safiquzzaman, Secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, delivered the announcement, accompanied by interim government labor advisors and advisors for home, industry, and fisheries and livestock.
A tripartite agreement was also signed, fulfilling all 18 demands presented by the workers.
Labour and Employment Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan announced at the meeting that normal operations in the industrial zones are expected to resume tomorrow.
Home Ministry Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury supported this, encouraging workers to return to their jobs starting tomorrow.
