On Saturday meeting with the Chief Advisor, the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) put forth six critical observations and eleven proposals aimed at facilitating reforms for a free and fair election within the next 18 to 24 months.
Key Observations
1: Slow Progress in Key Ministries: Despite the government's numerous speeches outlining its vision, advancements in crucial ministries such as Public Administration, Home, and Law have been sluggish, raising concerns about the overall law and order situation.
2: Mixed Performance Among Ministries: While some ministries are functioning effectively, others are struggling, particularly in managing essential administrative and legal frameworks.
3: Erosion of Unity: The solidarity established during the July-August revolution appears to be waning, especially among student groups and various political factions.
4: Lack of Tangible Results from Reform Commissions: The commissions tasked with spearheading state reforms have yet to yield significant outcomes, raising doubts about their future impact.
5: Insufficient Support for Martyrs' Families: The government has not adequately supported the rehabilitation of martyrs' families or those injured during the revolution, leading to further discontent.
6: Legitimacy Concerns: Questions regarding the legitimacy of the current government persist, particularly as some actions seem to contravene established legal norms.
Key Proposals
1: Restoration of Law and Order: Immediate actions should be taken within two months to restore law and order, including fully activating the police force and, if necessary, deploying military support.
2: Leadership Changes in Underperforming Ministries: Reassignments in ministries like Public Administration, Home, and Law are essential for improving efficiency.
3: Addressing Legitimacy Issues: Steps should be initiated to resolve the government’s legitimacy concerns, potentially through constitutional amendments or the establishment of a Constituent Assembly.
4: National Investigation Commission: A commission should be formed to investigate the violence of July-August, ensuring justice for martyrs’ families and proper treatment for the injured.
5: Truth and Reconciliation Commission: Establish a commission to hold accountable those involved in past authoritarian practices and expedite ongoing war crimes trials.
6: Prioritization of National Commissions: The existing six national commissions should be prioritized, and an additional health commission established to address public health reforms.
7: Coordination Team Formation: Create a team to unify political parties, students, and civil society for collaborative efforts.
8: Price Control and Corruption Measures: Introduce mechanisms for price control, combat corruption, and enhance public services through community monitoring teams.
9: Review of International Agreements: Examine international agreements made by the previous regime to safeguard national interests.
10: Roadmap for Political and Electoral Reforms: Develop a detailed roadmap to ensure credible elections within the specified timeline.
11: Government Transparency: The government must commit to bi-monthly progress reports, particularly regarding economic stability and governance reforms.
The AB Party’s comprehensive framework aims to address pressing issues and lay the groundwork for a more transparent and accountable governance structure as the nation prepares for its electoral future.
