The Rosatom Technical Academy and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed an agreement to extend the Academy's status as an IAEA Collaborating Centre focused on nuclear knowledge management and human resources development.

This makes the Academy the first and only IAEA Collaborating Centre for these areas across five programmatic domains, including a newly added focus on small modular reactors (SMRs).

The agreement was signed during the first International Conference on Small Modular Reactors and Their Applications, held in Vienna, Austria, from October 21 to 25, 2024.

Signatories included Yuri Seleznev, Rector of Rosatom Technical Academy; Mikhail Chudakov and Najat Mokhtar, Deputy Directors General of the IAEA; and Lydie Evrard, Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security.

Under the new agreement, the Rosatom Technical Academy will enhance its cooperation with the IAEA in several areas, including nuclear energy, security, nuclear sciences, and applications, while expanding collaboration to include small modular reactors, medical physics, and radiopharmaceuticals.

Yuri Seleznev remarked, “The expansion of programmatic areas of collaboration with the IAEA recognizes Russia’s high competencies in the development, design, and construction of small modular reactors, as well as advancements in nuclear medicine.”

“It further underscores the IAEA’s credibility in the programs executed by Rosatom Technical Academy in knowledge management and human resources development,” Seleznev added.

As a modern Centre of Excellence for nuclear industry professionals, the Rosatom Technical Academy offers professional retraining for managers and specialists, personnel certification, and scientific support to Rosatom’s organizations regarding the safe use of atomic energy.

Since becoming an IAEA Collaborating Centre in 2019, the Academy has organized schools, workshops, and training courses for specialists from countries starting nuclear power programs.

Over the past four years, it has trained 1,410 individuals from 61 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
