Political parties pledge unity on national sovereignty at a meeting with Dr Yunus
In a landmark gathering at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Wednesday, political parties across Bangladesh’s ideological spectrum pledged to stand united on matters of national independence, sovereignty, and dignity.
The meeting, chaired by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, aimed to consolidate national resolve in the face of growing internal and external pressures.
Dr. Yunus underscored the urgency of collective action to combat misinformation and foreign interference. Participants unequivocally condemned recent anti-Bangladesh activities in India, including attacks on the Assistant High Commission in Agartala and the dissemination of hostile propaganda.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Law Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul said the participants, despite their ideological differences, expressed a shared commitment to protecting the nation’s core interests.
“The participants unanimously supported the government’s firm stance on these issues and called for stronger diplomatic initiatives to counter such provocations,” he said.
The discussion touched on a range of pressing issues, including calls for greater transparency in bilateral agreements made with India during the previous Awami League government.
Particular focus was placed on the controversial Rampal power plant project, with demands for its cancellation and resistance to economic and cultural dominance from neighboring India.
Political leaders emphasized the importance of a respectful and cooperative relationship with India while maintaining Bangladesh’s sovereignty.
They also commended the public’s unified response in preserving communal harmony during recent tensions.
"Bangladesh can no longer afford to appear weak or submissive. We must remain united and resolute against any disinformation or provocation,” Professor Nazrul asserted.
The meeting proposed the establishment of a national political council, a security council, and a mass assembly to demonstrate solidarity and collective strength.
"Despite our political differences, we are one when it comes to safeguarding national independence and sovereignty," Nazrul added.
Prominent representatives from a diverse array of political parties, including the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Islami Andolon Bangladesh, and Jatiya Party (Zafar), were in attendance.
The meeting is part of a broader initiative led by Dr. Yunus to foster national unity. Earlier in the week, he held discussions with student leaders, and on Thursday, he is scheduled to meet with religious leaders to further this effort.
