Body of freedom fighter Mahbub ur Rahman given to BSMMU for medical research

The body of Mahbub ur Rahman (74), a distinguished freedom fighter who recently passed away, was donated to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for medical research.

The donation took place on Saturday, December 14, at the BSMMU’s Anatomy Department, including the mortuary, plastination lab, skin lab, and museum complex.

Professor Dr. Md. Sayidur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor on Health Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh, received the body on behalf of BSMMU.

The ceremony was presided over by Professor Shahinul Alam, Vice-Chancellor of the university. Faculty and students from the university's Anatomy Department were also present.

During the dissection, Health Advisor Dr. Md. Sayidur Rahman led an oath-taking ceremony for the students, emphasizing the importance of treating the body with the highest respect and dignity.

Mahbub ur Rahman’s wife, Geeti Rahman, had made a similar gesture by donating her body for medical research following her death in 2019.

The couple’s family wholeheartedly supports and honors their decision.

Born in 1950 in Jamalpur District, Mahbub ur Rahman was a brave freedom fighter during the Bangladesh Liberation War.

He actively participated in the 1971 war as a member of the renowned 'Crack Platoon' under Captain Haider.

Later, as a founding engineer in the Local Government Engineering Department, he played a vital role in building the department's infrastructure.

After over three decades of service to the country, he retired from government work in 1984. He continued to contribute to international organizations until 2018, sharing his wealth of experience.

In his later years, he dedicated himself to humanitarian causes.

The donation of a body for medical research is a noble act that helps raise societal awareness and contributes to scientific progress.

The exemplary decision made by this remarkable couple will inspire future generations to dedicate themselves to the well-being of humanity.

Organizations such as Bangladesh Research Analysis and Information Network (BRAIN) and Bangladesh Against Fascism (BAF) have expressed profound respect for the late couple and extend their heartfelt condolences to their family.

It is worth noting that their only son, Jyoti Rahman, is a senior entrepreneur at BRAIN and an activist of BAF. He is also an internationally recognized economist and a prominent commentator in global media.
