Workshop highlights mental health challenges for journalists
A mental health awareness workshop for
journalists, titled “Living with Reality”,
was held on Friday at Bishwo Shahitto Kendro in the capital.
The event was jointly organized by
Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media (BJIM) and mental health
organization Mindshaper.
The session focused on post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD) and the psychological toll on journalists, particularly
in the aftermath of the Milestone School plane crash.
Clinical and counseling psychologist
Ruknuzzaman Rupom of Mindshaper led an in-depth discussion on coping
mechanisms, preventing internalized stress, and pathways to emotional healing.
Around 20 journalists took part in the nearly four-hour program, which included practical exercises on emotional regulation, maintaining work-life balance, and understanding different psychological responses.
Participants also shared personal
accounts of trauma and mental health struggles.
“Mental health awareness is still a
relatively new concept in Bangladesh. Journalists often overlook their own
well-being because of the demanding nature of their profession. This initiative
seeks to change that,” said BJIM convenor Sam Jahan.
Mindshaper spokesperson Sazzad Hossain
noted, “Journalists are the mirror of society. When they learn to care for
their own mental health, they can become powerful advocates for wider public awareness.
Mindshaper is proud to contribute to this cause.”
The program concluded with BJIM and
Mindshaper awarding certificates to all participants.
