SWAT deployed at US embassy in Dhaka after militant threat alert
Security has been tightened in and around the US Embassy in Dhaka following specific intelligence about a possible militant attack.
At the embassy’s request, a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) was deployed to the Baridhara diplomatic enclave on Monday night (October 13).
The elite unit, trained to counter high-risk terrorist operations, has been stationed at the compound since then.
A senior DMP official, requesting anonymity, confirmed the deployment to Bangla Outlook.
“We were not informed in detail about the threat, but the SWAT team remains on-site at the embassy’s request,” the official said.
Another police officer said the deployment began around 9:30 p.m.
According to police intelligence sources, photographs of three suspected individuals believed to be linked to the threat have been circulated among law enforcement agencies.
The Special Branch (SB) has reportedly sent a confidential letter to the DMP Commissioner urging immediate steps to identify and detain the suspects and to strengthen security around the embassy.
Bangla Outlook has obtained a copy of the letter, which explicitly warns of a potential attack and calls for “urgent and enhanced security measures.”
Deputy Commissioner of Diplomatic Security Division, Nure Alam, declined to comment on the situation, saying he would address it later.
The US Embassy has also not issued any statement regarding the reported threat or the deployment of the SWAT team.
