1971 legacy and future cooperation take center stage at Bangladesh Armed Forces Day in Delhi

The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Monday marked Bangladesh Armed Forces Day with a formal reception designed to highlight the country’s positive global standing and uphold the reputation of the Bangladesh Armed Forces.

The Defence Wing hosted the event at the High Commission Auditorium, with Lieutenant General Manish Luthra, AVSM, Director General Military Operations of the Indian Army, attending as Chief Guest.

The reception brought together defence advisers and attachés from various countries, diplomats, senior Indian military officials, journalists, members of the Bangladeshi diaspora, and several Indian war veterans who participated in the 1971 Liberation War.

Proceedings opened with the national anthems of India and Bangladesh, followed by speeches delivered by the Defence Adviser of Bangladesh High Commission, the High Commissioner, and the Chief Guest.

In his address, Defence Adviser Brigadier General Md. Hafizur Rahman paid tribute to the heroism of Indian soldiers alongside Bangladesh’s Mukti Bahini in securing victory in 1971.

He expressed appreciation for the distinguished attendance and highlighted sustained progress in defence cooperation between Bangladesh and India, as well as the evolving capacity and global engagement of Bangladesh Armed Forces.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, Mr. Riaz Hamidullah, described the bilateral relationship as multidimensional and deeply rooted in shared history, culture and geography.

He stressed that the foundation of the relationship must be anchored in trust rather than a "zero-sum-game", and reiterated India’s pivotal role during the Liberation War of 1971.

While acknowledging existing bilateral challenges and sensitivities, he called for wisdom and collective effort in addressing them, urging both nations to seize opportunities for mutual benefit.

The High Commissioner also paid solemn tribute to the women who endured suffering during the war, and honoured the 1,668 members of the Indian Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives in Bangladesh’s liberation.

Chief Guest Lieutenant General Manish Luthra, in his remarks, emphasized the historic depth of India–Bangladesh ties, referring to decades of solidarity during critical periods.

He noted that shared sacrifices and cultural connections have shaped a remarkable bilateral partnership and expressed confidence that this cooperation, grounded in mutual respect and trust, will continue to grow stronger.

During the programme, Indian war veterans of 1971 were formally felicitated by the Chief Guest and the High Commissioner.

A commemorative video underscoring the Bangladesh Armed Forces’ role in nation-building and international peacekeeping was screened.

The event concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting, photo session, and a special dinner for invited guests.
