Russia and IAEA discuss safety and security issues at Zaporizhzhia NPP
The eleventh round of interagency consultations between Russia and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) took place in Kaliningrad, with the Russian delegation led by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev and the IAEA team headed by Director General Rafael Grossi.
Alexander Trembitskiy, head of Rostechnadzor, participated on behalf of Russia, alongside Alexey Rtischev, chief of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Troops of the Russian Armed Forces, as well as representatives from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal National Guard Troops Service.
The consultations followed up on the discussions held in September between President Vladimir Putin and Rafael Grossi during World Atomic Week.
Talks centered on nuclear safety and security at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), which is currently under Russian control.
During the meeting, Likhachev briefed the IAEA director general on the current status of the ZNPP and outlined measures undertaken by Rosatom and other Russian agencies to maintain safe operations under difficult conditions.
Both sides reviewed the restoration of external power supply to the facility after repairs to two high-voltage transmission lines.
Likhachev thanked Grossi and IAEA personnel for their role in securing a temporary ceasefire from Ukrainian forces to allow for the repair work.
The consultations also addressed IAEA staff rotations and joint oversight activities with Rostechnadzor at the ZNPP site.
