Democratic United Front condemns rising violence against women and children
The Central Steering Committee of the Democratic United Front (DUF) on Thursday expressed deep concern over the continued incidents of violence, rape, and murder targeting women and children across Bangladesh, including the recent rape and killing of child Ramisa in Mirpur two days ago.
In a statement issued on May 21, DUF leaders said the recurring nature of such “heinous crimes” reflects a growing culture of impunity in the country. They alleged that perpetrators often escape justice due to political patronage and protection from influential quarters, encouraging further acts of violence and abuse.
The alliance stated that the failure to ensure proper investigation, fair trials, and exemplary punishment for offenders has contributed significantly to the worsening situation.
According to the leaders, unless the prevailing atmosphere of impunity is dismantled, violence against women and children will continue unabated. They also described the trend as a manifestation of broader social decay.
The DUF urged the government and law enforcement agencies to take impartial action against those involved in rape, abuse, and murder, regardless of political affiliation or influence.
The leaders demanded justice for child victim Ramisa and called for the highest punishment for those responsible for her rape and killing.
The statement also called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of individuals involved in incidents of violence and sexual assault reported across the country, including at Jahangirnagar University.
Expressing concern over the deterioration of law and order, the alliance also criticized the rise of mob violence and extortion in different areas, including Mirpur Shah Ali Mazar.
DUF leaders alleged that the newly elected BNP-led government has failed to bring the situation under control even after three months in office, describing it as a serious administrative failure.
The alliance further demanded effective government measures to curb mob violence, extortion, and criminal activities. At the same time, they called upon citizens to build a united social resistance against rape, violence against women, murder, mob terrorism, and extortion.
The statement was jointly signed by DUF Coordinator and BASAD General Secretary Comrade Bazlur Rashid Firoz, CPB President Comrade Sazzad Zahir Chandan, and several other leaders of left-leaning political parties and alliances.
