Bangladesh enters nuclear digital Era as Russia deploys advanced AI-assisted operator system at Rooppur
Bangladesh’s Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has achieved another major milestone with the installation of an advanced Operator Information Support System (OISS), marking the first time Russia has deployed the cutting-edge technology at an overseas nuclear facility.
The system has been successfully integrated into the instrumentation and control infrastructure of Unit 1, which is currently undergoing commissioning. Developed by Rosatom Automated Control Systems (RASU), the OISS is designed to function as a “smart assistant” for plant operators by monitoring and analyzing tens of thousands of operational parameters in real time.
The deployment represents a significant step in Bangladesh’s effort to adopt world-class digital technologies for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of its first nuclear power plant.
According to RASU CEO Andrey Butko, the system enhances operational reliability by optimizing information processing and supporting rapid decision-making for plant personnel.
“The Operator Information Support System assists personnel in monitoring and analyzing the condition of the power unit in real time. By supporting operator decision-making, the system significantly improves operational efficiency and reliability,” he said, adding that the implementation at Rooppur marks another milestone in expanding advanced digital technologies across global nuclear energy projects.
Project Director Dr. Md. Kabir Hossain described the initiative as a critical advancement for Bangladesh’s future energy infrastructure.
“Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is a landmark project for Bangladesh. Alongside modern reactor technology, advanced digital solutions like OISS will help establish a strong operational culture and strengthen the effectiveness of plant personnel,” he said.
The system will remain restricted to authorized personnel within the Rooppur facility.
The OISS was first piloted at Russia’s Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant and later introduced at Kursk NPP-2. Rooppur features two Russian-designed Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors with a combined capacity of 2,400 megawatts, meeting modern international nuclear safety standards.
