JU rape case: accused Chhatra League leader resided illegally in university hall

The accused Mustafizur Rahman, a member of Chhatra League

The Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus witnessed widespread protests following allegations of the rape of a woman, accompanied by the confinement of her husband in a residential hall. Teachers and students have taken to the streets, demanding justice and the punishment of the accused. The uproar began on Saturday night (February 3) when news of the alleged rape surfaced, prompting students to assemble in front of the implicated hall, with several teachers joining the demonstration.

Various forms of protest, including human chains, marches, and rallies, have been organized. Protesting students are voicing concerns with holding anti-rape placards and slogans.

A formal complaint has been filed by the victim at the Ashulia police station regarding the rape incident. The police have apprehended four individuals, including the primary accused, and sought a seven-day remand for further investigation. The victim has been taken to the One Stop Crisis Center at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for a medical examination.

According to the victim's account, the rape occurred in the forest near Mir Musharraf Hossain Hall of the University around 9:30 pm on Saturday. The accused are Mustafizur Rahman, a student of the 45th batch of the university's IR department, and Mamun (45), an outsider. Mustafiz is a resident student of Mir Musharraf Hossain Hall and holds the position of International Affairs Secretary in the University Branch Chhatra League.

Furthermore,  Mustafizur Rahman, the main accused in the Jahangirnagar University (JAB) rape case, was found to be living in the residential hall illegally. He had unlawfully occupied a room in the university's Mir Musharraf Hossain Hall for over a year. According to university sources, Mustafizur resided in room number 205 of the "B" block of Hossain Hall. However, the organization expelled him from Chhatra League shortly after the rape allegations surfaced.

According to the information from the university's examination controller office, the theoretical exams for the postgraduate class of the International Relations Department commenced on November 10, 2022, and concluded on December 7. Per the university's student discipline ordinance, students are mandated to vacate the residence halls within seven days after completing their postgraduate examinations. However, this regulation is not enforced at Jahangirnagar University.

Numerous students continue to stay unlawfully even after finishing their studies. It has been observed that individuals who are members of the ruling student organization tend to violate the residence hall regulations.

When rape allegations were levelled against Mustafizur, who had already completed his studies, on Saturday night, teachers and students unitedly demanded the expulsion of non-students from the halls. They issued a three-day ultimatum for the removal of non-students from the halls, in addition to urging prompt action to ensure the trial of the accused in the rape case.

Addressing the situation, Professor Sabbir Alam, provost of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, stated, "We are actively working and taking measures to evict non-students from the hall. Soon, every non-student will be removed from the hall, one by one."
