BCL leaders order registrar to cancel all appointments except BCL

Chhatra League has threatened to cancel all appointments except for Chhatra League members at Chittagong University (CU). On Wednesday afternoon, Yahya Tipu, appointed as a computer lab assistant during former Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr.  Shireen Akhtar's tenure, was assaulted by activists from the university's Chhatra League branch. Acting registrar KM Noor Ahmed was also severely scolded by BCL leaders at that time. They demanded the cancellation of appointments for "all individuals appointed outside of the Chhatra League."

Reports indicate that Yahya was temporarily appointed as a lab assistant in the Department of Psychology with a daily salary of Tk 550. Yahya arrived to join the registrar's office on Wednesday afternoon when he was cornered and assaulted by BCL leaders and activists.

Yahya stated, "I came to start my job in the afternoon. Chhatra League leaders asked me if I was a member of the Chhatra League. When I replied no, they immediately assaulted me."

A video of Yahya being assaulted and the registrar being threatened has circulated widely on social media. In the video, BCL leader Wahidul Islam warns the registrar that appointments outside BCL leadership should be "cancelled."

Wahid pointed his finger at the registrar and stated, "He (Yahia) is still sitting there. He is not a member of the Chhatra League but still got the job. The VC is taking a bribe of five lakh taka from him."

Several Chhatra League leaders were present, speaking harshly to the registrar. Former international affairs secretary of Chhatra League, Morshedul Alam Rifat, threatened the registrar, saying, "Cancel appointments made outside of Chhatra League. Only Chhatra League members should be appointed. There's no issue if BCL activists are appointed, but all others should be cancelled. Chhatra League has the right to appoint its supporters. What rights do others have? Cancel all appointments made outside of BCL."

The video also shows Chhatra League leaders pressuring the registrar to inform the new vice-chancellor about these appointments in various ways. University Employees Union President Sumon Mamun and General Secretary Mansoor Ali were also present, speaking on behalf of Chhatra League leaders. Some members of the university's proctorial body were also at the scene.

Regarding the incident, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Taher told Bangla Outlook, "Such an unexpected incident occurred as soon as I took charge. It's truly saddening. This kind of environment poses a threat to university education and administration. I will launch an investigation as soon as possible on Thursday. We will not bow down to those involved in such incidents."
