The cabinet committee on law and order in Bangladesh has decided to shut down social media platforms including Facebook and YouTube, should the government's complaints continue to be ignored.
This decision was made during a meeting of the caibnet committee held at the Secretariat on Sunday, March 31st.
Following the meeting, the committee's chairman and the Minister of Liberation War Affairs, A.K.M. Mozammel Haq, disclosed the decision to the press.
He stated, "They (Facebook, YouTube, Google) do not listen to our recommendations on various issues. This is because there are no offices here to prevent rumors and control cybercrime. We will say that they are not listening to us."
He further mentioned, "If necessary, these services will be suspended for some time. Initially, we will properly inform the international organizations that they (social media) are allowing these crimes and rumors by not taking our complaints into consideration and that they are not taking any steps to prevent them."
The minister explained, "At first, we will notify them multiple times. If needed, we will also convey it through newspapers ads so that it doesn't seem like fundamental rights are being violated here."
He added, "According to the social media law, any complaint received should be investigated and addressed. They are not investigating our complaints. Now, we will inform the public about their indifference through a public notice, so that if a ban (on social media) is imposed, the responsibility does not fall on the government but on them."
