Barrister Khokon wants to take on responsibilities, disregarding the party's decision

Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon

Despite the Nationalist Lawyers Forum's dissent, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon is assuming the role of the elected president of the Supreme Court Bar.

He shared this information during a dialogue on Thursday. However, the Nationalist Lawyers Forum had sent a letter advising Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and three others who had emerged victorious in the presidential race, to refrain from accepting their positions.

Last Wednesday, the president and the general secretary of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum issued a letter requesting Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon to abstain from assuming the responsibilities, following a collective meeting of senior central leaders, advisory members, and former presidents and secretaries of the Supreme Court Lawyers Association. The meeting rejected the results of the Supreme Court Lawyers Association election held on 6th and 7th March and announced on 10th March, deciding to continue a fair and reasonable movement demanding a re-election.

In this context, the letter stated, "As responsible leaders of the party, you are expected to comply with this party decision and abstain from assuming any roles for the 2024-25 term of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Lawyers Association."

Regarding the letter from the party forum, Barrister Khokon said he agrees with the call for a re-election in the Supreme Court Bar mentioned in the letter from the organization. He also noted that he had demanded a vote recount on the day of the election, which was not accepted by the commission. He stressed that their panel was leading by at least 12 positions and remains firm on the demand for a re-election, including for his presidency.

He further questioned the role of a top leader of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum, describing it as mysterious, and accused the said leader of suggesting a halt in vote counting to favor the Awami League panel. Khokon claimed that with fair counting, their panel could have won at least 13 positions.

Regarding the forum's letter, Barrister Khokon dismissed others' opinions, stating his undefeated history in elections. He believes that an incorrect decision was made at the time, which prevented their majority win. When questioned about the organization's decision against assuming duties, he responded by emphasizing his elected status and questioning the relevance of accepting or rejecting duties.

Previously, in the 2024-25 elections of the Supreme Court Lawyers Association, candidates from the BNP-supported panel, including Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, won four positions, including the presidency. On the other hand, candidates from the Awami League panel, including Shah Manjurul Haque for the secretary position, secured victories in 10 positions.
