How may Bangladesh play a role in the Middle East crisis?

The world has become smaller, thanks to globalization. The impacts of events in one part of the world may affect the remotest corners in the other parts. These include commercial webs, political disability and mass level dissent.

The Middle East, the most tumultuous place in human history, has been on the brink of another war. Iran has retaliated with the Israeli provocation. The Zionist country, which has decimated the people in Gaza strip over the last few months, have gleaned hatred and condemnation from around the globe. It has been desperate to regain some legitimacy to wage wars. For that reason, they provoked Iran.

The Muslim country, which denounces Israel as an illegitimate state, had to retaliate to salvage its pride but in all likelihood, it will be cautious not to escalate the situation. Perhaps, the Middle East and the world will be spared for another major war but the situation nevertheless is very anxious.

Where does Bangladesh come here? The country is far away from the potential war theatre. But there are two vital things to consider. Bangladesh is the second largest Muslim country and it has a myriad of workers in the Middle East.

Bangladesh unfortunately is ruled by an illegitimate regime which will kowtow to any other foreign force to cling onto the throne but the country may enforce some valuable soft powers.

Diplomacy at the public level may be crucial to strengthen the bonds in the Muslim world. Muslim world is divided along many lines as countries like Saudi Arabia and Jordan will oppose Iran even if they have to extend support to Israel. But the sentiment of general people is the opposite of that of rulers.

During the 80s, a poorer Bangladesh made an impressive impact as a vital Muslim country. Huge number of people joined the freedom fights of Palestine and Afghanistan. The expatriates played a crucial role in forming Muslim solidarity and OIC became a powerful organization.

Bangladesh has to be very aware as an escalated situation will mean millions of its expatriate workers will lose their jobs, and may have to return home. A huge loss of remittance will shatter the already dilapidated economy of the country.

But the people-based connections, sense of solidarity may change the game.

The Boxer: The author is one of the indefatigable working-class Bangladeshis who have been trying to change the fate of the nation but were betrayed by the ruling elites and autocrats. The name is inspired by a character in George Orwell's 1945 novel Animal Farm.
