An open letter to a hero…..

Dear Abu Syeed,

I hope you’re at peace up in the heavens with your comrades. It hasn't been long since Bangladesh and the world witnessed your image, arms stretched wide in defiance.

When I first saw that image, it reminded me of the great phoenix. Indeed, Bangladesh has risen from the ashes, inspired by your sacrifice—a nation reborn.

However, as you know, the work is far from finished. While the people of this great country have regained their voice, dark clouds still linger on the horizon.

Though you liberated us from the depths of fascism, we have yet to free ourselves from the remnants of the regime's decay. This will take time.

Reforms are essential for sustaining our democracy, but we must also uphold the spirit of the movement to counter any immediate threats. No one embodies that spirit more than you, and rising above our own self-interests is crucial to honoring your memory.

The people of this country must have the right to elect the government they desire and to replace it if it fails to deliver on its promises. The consensus on this is clear: we must take immediate steps to prioritize the people's choice and prevent any arrangement that could lead to a dangerous concentration of power and the resurgence of fascism.

For the sake of all the martyrs, we cannot allow fascism to take root again in our great nation. As we embrace this newfound freedom, we must ensure that we learn from our past mistakes.

Freedom also entails the right for people to accept or reject anyone presented as the father of the nation or its ultimate leader. One of our primary responsibilities now is to liberate our history from political influence.

Our historical narrative should be based on facts, enabling our people to make value judgments rooted in truth. It must not be distorted to foster cultism or unwarranted adoration of any individual.

Moreover, no one person is greater than the nation itself. History is dynamic, and it is misguided to monopolize it by crediting a single individual with the nation's birth. Bangladesh emerged from the sacrifices of many, and you and your comrades have become integral to that history.

Future generations of Bangladeshis will learn about your sacrifices, which is why our historical narrative must remain fair and unblemished.

I am confident that Bangladesh will rise again as a nation. The resilience of our people has consistently triumphed over adversity. However, it is crucial that their interests are steadfastly protected to uplift them.

We must create a society with equitable wealth distribution and avoid reverting to an oligarchic system born of rampant kleptocracy.

You and your companions sacrificed your lives for a society free from inequality, and we must continue to pursue this goal. While perfect equality may never be achievable, justice without prejudice must prevail to bring us closer to it.

Every citizen must feel a sense of belonging and accountability, and every individual should believe that the state will protect justice.

Lastly, I want to express my gratitude for redefining what it means to be a hero in this country. We have learned that true heroes are those who go beyond their duties and sacrifice their lives for the freedom of others.

Heroes are those who, despite facing obstacles, fought unwaveringly for our rights and made sure the voices of the masses were heard. They are the ones who, despite imprisonment, torture, and intimidation, never lost sight of the dream for a better Bangladesh.

We've also come to understand that excelling in one's profession does not make one a hero; to be a hero, one must speak the truth, even when it conflicts with personal interests.

Thanks to you, Wasim, Mugdho, and others, Bangladesh now has a true set of heroes who will light the way for future generations, ensuring that your sacrifices are not in vain.

Yours truly,

A proud citizen of Bangladesh
