Head of Congress in Delhi, Arvindar Singh, resigns

Arvindar Singh Lovely has resigned as the head of the Congress in Delhi. He resigned today, Sunday, citing a dispute with Congress General Secretary Deepak Babaria and issues related to forming an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi. Indian news media NDTV reported this news.

In a letter to the President of the Indian National Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, Lovely stated that since he is unable to protect the interests of Congress workers in Delhi, he sees no reason to continue as the head of this unit. He mentioned that the Delhi Congress unit was against forming an alliance with a party (AAP) that was established on false, fabricated, and incredible corruption charges against Congress. Despite this, Congress decided to form an alliance with AAP in Delhi. The General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (in charge of Delhi) vetoed several decisions taken by him as the head of the Delhi Congress. Since his appointment, the General Secretary (in charge of Delhi) has not even allowed him to appoint anyone to a significant position within this branch.

NDTV mentions that as part of the alliance in Delhi, Congress was allocated three Lok Sabha seats. According to Lovely, 'unknown individuals' were nominated for the North-West and North-East seats, causing discontent among leaders and workers of the Delhi Congress. Udit Raj and Kanhaiya Kumar were announced as candidates for these seats. However, the AICC and the party's high command are not prepared to compromise on this matter. Under such circumstances, some leaders in Delhi are considering joining the BJP or planning to form a new party if the issue remains unresolved.

It is noteworthy that Lovely was appointed as the president of the Delhi Congress in August last year, replacing Anil Chaudhury. He previously served as a minister in the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government in Delhi from 2003 to 2013 and was the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee from 2013 to 2015. However, he left Congress for the BJP in 2017 but returned to Congress in 2028.
