Russian attacks pushing us back: Ukrainian army chief

The Ukrainian Chief of General Staff, Oleksandr Syrskyi, commented that Russian attacks are pushing Ukraine back. This Eastern European country has been facing Russian aggression for over two years. According to Syrskyi, the situation on the front lines has worsened due to multiple Russian assaults.

On Sunday night (April 28), the British news outlet BBC reported that the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has stated that the conditions on the front lines have deteriorated further. Oleksandr Syrskyi mentioned that Ukrainian forces have also retreated from several positions in the eastern Donetsk region.

Before receiving the critical supply of new American weapons, Ukraine is trying to counter Russia's advantage in manpower and artillery. Last week, the United States agreed to provide a military aid package worth $61 billion to Ukraine, but the new American weapons have not yet reached the Russia-Ukraine frontline. Mainly, Ukrainian soldiers have been fighting amidst shortages of ammunition, troops, and air defense for several months.

In a Telegram message on Sunday, General Syrskyi stated, "The situation on the frontline, i.e., the front of the battle, has worsened."

He confirmed that Ukrainian forces have withdrawn from some positions in the Donetsk area. Most of the fighting is currently centered around Chasiv Yar, a Kiev-controlled fortress that Russia is attempting to reach after capturing Avdiivka.

Meanwhile, General Syrskyi has admitted losing territory to advancing Russians, mentioning that Moscow has achieved tactical success in some sectors. Other Ukrainian brigades are being brought in to replace the damaged units.

On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Sunday that their troops have captured the village of Novobakhmutivka, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Avdiivka.

Notably, General Syrskyi became the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in February of this year amidst speculation of a rift between President Zelenskyy and the then Chief of General Staff, General Zaluzhnyi.

Earlier this month, General Syrskyi warned that the situation on the battlefield in the country's east has "significantly worsened."

Additionally, this week, the Commander of Ukraine's National Guard, Oleksandr Pivnenko, said he expects Russian forces to attempt to advance towards the city of Kharkiv, located near the Russian border.

After months of stalemate, last week President Joe Biden signed a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, despite opposition from some members of Congress.
