Student Protests Take a New Form in America

At the University of California (UC), tensions have escalated among student groups divided over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. One faction supports Israel's actions against Palestine, while another protests against Israeli military strikes in Palestinian territories. The involvement of external activists is suspected, adding to the intensity of the confrontations, which have been vividly captured in viral online videos.

In one such video, masked supporters of Israel are seen assaulting pro-Palestinian demonstrators, an act that UC Chancellor Mary Osako has condemned as 'horrific violence.' In response to the unrest, university authorities have summoned law enforcement to restore order.

This incident at UC closely followed a police operation at Columbia University in New York, where law enforcement cleared pro-Palestinian protestors who had occupied Hamilton Hall for 24 hours, defying university directives. The subsequent clash in Los Angeles indicates a troubling escalation in campus tensions.

Los Angeles Councilor Katie expressed grave concerns about the safety and control of the UC campus, describing the situation as having spiraled out of control. This series of events is part of a broader national discussion among students at various American universities, spurred by ongoing violence in the Middle East. The dialogue began in earnest following a deadly Hamas attack on Israel last October, which claimed approximately 1,200 lives and provoked a severe Israeli counter-offensive in Palestine that has persisted for seven months, resulting in the deaths of around 35,000 Palestinians.
